Beginner’s Guide to Content Marketing

Content marketing sounds like the biggest hassle for a business to pursue. Many entrepreneurs would rather not think about it at all because through day to day tasks, it doesn’t seem the most important or necessary. Many of us, including designers, don’t know what content marketing is. We thought it would be good to break this down and dive into what content marketing is and why it’s important.

What is content marketing?

First things first, content marketing is ANY marketing that involves the creation and sharing of media and publishing content in order to acquire and retain customers. Content is created in various formats such as: video, infographics, photos, case studies, commercials, etc. Nowadays, consumers have shut of the traditional world of of marketing. When we are watching television, the last thing we want is to be bogged down by commercials, hence the reason for DVR. We find ourselves just wanting the meat of what we are watching and leaving out the rest. As entrepreneurs we must recognize that our customer market is changing. Consumers are all about being online and mobile now; no one wants to be forced to watch an advertisement.

What this does mean for us?

Entrepreneurs and business owners must understand that traditional marketing is becoming less and less effective by the hour and we must now create strategies to reach our target audience without bombarding them with advertisements, banners, and buttons.

The purpose of content marketing is to attract customers by consistently creating relevant and valuable content with the motive of changing and enhancing the customer’s behavior. The hardest challenge for entrepreneurs is to fighting through laziness. Companies wish business was easy as feeding your customers once and have them returning again and again. The reality is: companies must put in the work to gain and retain customers.

Three Forms of Content

Now that you know what content marketing is, you must also know that there isn’t a perfect formula for it. Many websites and people will spill their sales pitch in “THE 3 STEP PERFECT CONTENT MARKETING STRATEGY”, but there isn’t. Your strategy must be created BY YOU for it to be perfect FOR YOU. Content marketing is an evolving process that requires enhancements and changes when necessary and what works for you might not work for someone else. It’s extremely important that when building your strategy that you keep these three forms of content in mind:

PUBLISHED CONTENT
Anything published by your company such as blog articles on your website to a social media post.

REACTIVE CONTENT
This one is huge and the hardest to achieve but never give up! Reactive Content is staying in touch with your customers and answering their concerns they have with your product.

PROACTIVE CONTENT
This is promoting your business on other people’s networks, including sharing content, retweeting and publishing on other pages, and inviting people to events.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND NETWORKING IS A MUST FOR 2017 ENTREPRENEURS! Many businesses believe they are doing just fine without being on social media, however, they are committing marketing suicide. Your entire target market is on social media, and you should be too.

When developing content marketing, you must first have a strategy. Content marketing is easy to produce; there are tons of user friendly web and mobile applications meant for the overly productive entrepreneur.
